Sacyr Agua, S.L. is a private company incorporated within the Sacyr group dedicated to the management of the complete water cycle through public concession or private initiative and engineering, development, management, maintenance, and operation of all types of water plants. With more than 60 designed and built plants, Sacyr Agua is one of the main companies of water technology in Spain.

The main outstanding activity work fields are:

  • Desalination of brackish and sea water.
  • Drinking Water treatment for supply.
  • Wastewater treatment and Reuse: Tertiary treatment of wastewater, urban sewage water and industrial wastewater.
  • Treatment of water for industrial processes.

Desalination is the largest specialty of Sacyr Agua, in design and construction as well as operation and maintenance. It is one of the 10 largest companies in the world in this sector and it has a proven experience in providing successful large plants worldwide, with more than 1.6 million m3/day installed in reverse osmosis plants in countries such as Spain, Omán, Israel, Australia, Algeria, Chile, Tunisia, among others. In the same way, Sacyr Agua has built the largest plant world with Electrodialysis Reversal technology (200.000 m3/day) in Spain (Abrera).

The Research and Development (R&D) Department of Sacyr Agua has performed several research projects in the field of water treatment, primarily aimed to reducing environmental impacts, consumption and improve water quality. Within this continuous objective of Sacyr Agua to reduce the energy consumption of the desalination process, this project has been proposed to recover the energy contained in the brine, prior to its discharge into the sea, as well as to increase the global conversion of the process desalination.

Sacyr Agua leads the Life Hyreward project, which arises with the goal of making desalination processes by combining reverse osmosis and reverse electrodialysis (RED) more sustainable. In the project Sacyr Agua collaborates with REDstack (a spin-off of WETSUS, European center of excellence for sustainable water technology) and Pure Water Group, which together offer a solid base of specialized knowledge in the development and commercialization of electromembrane technologies.

Pure Water Group

Pure Water Group is a leading manufacturer of advanced and sustainable water purification equipment and highly specialized in environmental friendly technologies such as; Electro Deionization (EDI), Membrane Degassing (MD) and Electro Dialysis Reversal (EDR). The water treatment plants are utilized for the production of High Purity and Ultra-Pure Water, applications related to water desalination and water recovery.

Pure Water Group cooperates internationally with Water System Integrators or so-called OEMs, that fully rely on our expertise, extensive experience and dedicated technical and commercial support. From the warehouse in the Netherlands, Pure Water Group distribute their water treatment equipment to every corner of the globe. Although Pure Water Group provides technical information to EPC’s they typically sell equipment and parts to Water System Integrators (OEMs) only, who offer the complete WTP.

REDstack

REDstack, founded in 2005, is a Dutch spin‐off company of WETSUS (www.wetsus.nl), European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology, in The Netherlands. The sole shareholder of REDstack is W&F Technologies, which is also the owner of Pure Water Group.

The last years REDstack has grown significantly and currently the dedicated team/workforce consist of 14 people, 5 of them holding advanced degrees. The mission of this company is to develop and commercialize (reverse) electro‐dialysis (RED and ED) and related technologies.

Over the years they have gained great expertise and experience in the fields of RED and ED in general, and more specific, in integrated stack design and manufacturing.

Currently REDstack holds 13 granted patents, 4 pending patents and a few more in the pipeline- Furthermore several investigations have been published on RED in peer reviewed journals, which reflects their ability and ambitions to be an innovative company putting a lot of resources in R&D.

The RED‐technology was first studied extensively on lab scale and since 2014 REDstack has been investigating RED under real world conditions in a pilot research plant at the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands, the first and only of this size in the world. Furthermore, over the years, and still, they have been working together intensively with many universities, research institutes and companies in the Netherlands and abroad. Several public grants were obtained, which enabled REDstack, to perform research and develop the RED-technology.
